What happens on the day
Have you always wondered what it would be like to work at a zoo? During this hands-on experience, you’ll take on the role of zookeeper and discover how to take care of a variety of exotic animals!
Your wild day begins at the main entrance of the Oglebay Good Zoo. Located in Wheeling, West Virginia, this incredible zoo is the only institution in the state that is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Home to over 65 different species of animals, the Oglebay Good Zoo is the perfect place to learn the ins and outs of zookeeping!
After checking in, you’ll follow a friendly and experienced zookeeper behind the scenes. From fresh fruits and veggies to meat and specialized kibble, you’ll learn about the animal’s diverse diets and even help prepare a few meals. Additionally, discover the importance of animal enrichment and see how the zoo provides each animal with unique ways to boost curiosity.
Then, it’s time to meet some animals! Feed and interact with a mob of adorable kangaroos and wallabies before assisting with different training exercises. Training is an important part of zookeeping as it helps to positively reinforce certain behaviors. Finally, your unforgettable day will conclude with an incredible tour of the zoo’s on-site animal hospital!
