What happens on the day
Calling all fossil hunters! Did you know that coastal South Carolina holds some of the most spectacular fossils from millions of years ago? This 4.5-hour tour takes you on a fascinating trip to remote locations filled with prehistoric wonders just waiting to be discovered.
Join your expert naturalist guide aboard a boat as you cruise through pristine and picturesque marshlands to an uninhabited beach. Listen closely as they share interesting details about the local ecosystem, its current wildlife residents, and the creatures and beasts who used to roam the area.
Once on shore, you’ll set off on an invigorating 5-mile roundtrip hike where you’re guaranteed to find prehistoric fossils. Keep your eyes peeled for shark teeth from species like megalodon, mako, great white, and tiger shark. Collect vertebrate fossils from marine mammals, sea turtles, and marine fish. You may even get lucky enough to find remnants of Ice Age megafauna like tapir, sloth, llama, bison, horse, saber-toothed cats, mammoth, and mastodon.

What can I expect on the tour?
You can expect to have a great time with a knowledgeable naturalist guide as you search for prehistoric fossils.
What should I wear?
Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes that you don’t mind getting sandy. It’s also recommended to bring along a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a backpack to carry personal belongings like drinks and snacks, and a camera to document your findings. (Tip: Bring an extra bag for your fossil and shell collections!)
What kind of boat will we take out to the lighthouse?
You will be aboard either a Carolina Skiff or Sea Hunt Bay Boat.
Are there any age restrictions?
All ages are welcome. However, there is a 5-mile hike. So, participants should be comfortable walking for 1-3 hours along the beach.
