What happens on the day
Embark on a unique journey into one of Savannah’s oldest graveyards with this Bonaventure Cemetery Walking Tour!
Your 90-minute tour will begin when you meet up with your professional guide outside the front gates of this historic burial ground. Leisurely stroll below an archway of towering oak trees draped in with blankets of eerily beautiful Spanish moss. During certain times of the year, you may even pass rows of dazzling pink azaleas and other gorgeous flowers.
Follow your guide to some of the area’s most famous graves including the engraved bench of popular lyricist, Johnny Mercer, and American writer and poet, Conrad Aiken. You’ll also visit the masterfully carved statue of little Gracie Watson who died when she was only six years old. It is often said that her memorial is an exact replica of what Gracie looked like when she was alive.
Throughout your tour, your guide will point out various examples of cemetery symbolism. Common symbols include broken columns or trees, angels, draped urns, and more. Learn how to decipher these images and uncover the messages hidden throughout the cemetery.
Discover the beauty, wonder, and fascinating history of Bonaventure Cemetery on this guided walking tour!
