Your wild adventure begins in downtown Anchorage. Here, you’ll meet your expert naturalist guide and hop aboard a comfortable, climate-controlled vehicle. It’s a 30-minute drive to Chugach State Park and along the way, your guide will share fascinating facts about the Alaskan wilderness.
As soon as you pull up to the trailhead, you’ll be amazed at the winter wonderland around you. Stare up at snow-covered trees and step into an enchanting frozen landscape. To help you navigate the icy terrain, you’ll be given a sturdy pair of microspikes. Following your guide, you’ll embark on an easy, 2-mile round trip nature walk. Stroll beneath towering aspen, spruce, and birch trees while keeping an eye out for wildlife. If you’re lucky, you may spot the large feet of a snowshoe hare, the quills of a porcupine, or even a giant moose!
Next, you’ll wind along the South Fork Eagle River. Marvel at the river’s ice-dam formations before reaching the iconic Barbara Falls. You won’t believe your eyes as you stand at the base of this 35-foot waterfall, frozen in time. Watch as icicles sparkle in the sunlight and snap photos of the waterfall’s gorgeous ice bridges. Spend some time admiring the falls and munch on complimentary snacks.

How hard is the hike?
The hike is 2 miles round trip and is considered easy to moderate. You should be able to balance well and feel comfortable walking in slippery conditions with the assistance of microspikes. Some parts of the trail are steep and hilly, placing additional stress on areas of the body not impacted by level terrain.
How long is the drive from Anchorage?
It takes approximately 30 minutes to drive from Anchorage to the trailhead.
Where does this experience take place?
You'll begin in Anchorage and drive to Chugach State Park where you'll hike to the picturesque Barabar Falls.
