FAQs
What can I expect on the tour?
You can expect to have a great time with a knowledgeable guide as you explore the waters and landscape of Black Canyon and Emerald Cave.
What should I wear?
Wear layered clothing (i.e., swimsuit and layers for warmth) but preferably no cotton or denim. For footwear, bring water shoes, water sandals, or tennis shoes. No flip-flops please. And a hat, sunglasses, & sunscreen are strongly recommended.
What if I don’t have any kayaking experience?
Beginners are welcome! Although, by the end of the trip, you’ll be a confident kayaker. Your professional guide introduces newcomers to kayaking every day.
Will I get wet?
Yes. This is a river trip. You will definitely get wet, at least up to your knees. Anything above that is considered a bonus!
Is there white water? Will I tip over?
Most days, the river is flat water with no rapids. Depending on wind, weather, and flow rates, there can be choppy water, rolling waves, and even large swells along the way. Your kayak is stable, and most people make it through the day without any “out-of-boat experiences". This doesn’t mean that you should take the river lightly! The Colorado is a big cold river, and there can be strong currents, eddies, hidden obstacles, and other unforeseen circumstances that may pose a threat. Your guide is prepared for this and will steer you in the right direction for a safe and memorable experience.

Response from Virgin Gifts
Hi Bonnie! Paddling the Colorado River must have been breathtaking and I’m truly happy to hear that your guide was a wealth of knowledge! I hope Emerald Cave was as sweet as your review. Warmest regards, Courtney
This review is more so on the experience we had with the company’s tour, and not with Virgin Experiences. It was an easy process to book the tour and get confirmation. As for the tour, expect to be kayaking for at least 3 hours. We enjoyed it very much, with the exception that the tour guide and staff could have done a better job of instructing us on how to use these specific kayaks. (We had our own, and not tandem.) We’re lucky we can pick up quickly, but it was also because we had to figure it out on our own too. Also, the cave is small, and they had everyone back up into the cave to just stay and wait until we were all in. Lame if you ask me, but overall beautiful water and lovely time.
