What happens on the day
Perfect for anyone fascinated by volcanoes, this tour begins with pick-up at Hilo area hotels and a drive through charming Hilo town before heading out to the old fishing village of Kalapana.
Meet up with your National Park Service certified guide who will educate you on the volcanology, geology, and history of Kilauea volcano. Enjoy in-depth narration on the various lava flows and flora and fauna that you’ll see along your hike.
Visit Kaimu Beach, one of the best places to experience the continuous cycle of destruction and rebirth that gives the Big Island its almost magical atmosphere. You’ll see the destruction and creation with your own eyes as you hike out across the lava flow to the new black sand beach that formed where the bay used to be.
Head over to Star of the Sea Painted Church. Moved by the community twice to save it from advancing lava flows in 1990, this decommissioned church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Next up, you’ll travel to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Visit the Kilauea Visitor’s Center, the Kilauea Iki Crater Overlook, and Steaming Bluffs. Stop in at the Volcano House for incredible views of Kilauea Caldera, and hike to the cracks and sinkholes left behind by the historic eruption of 2018.
The trip will finish with a provided dinner near the National Park.

Are there age restrictions?
Yes, participants must be at least 3 years old. And anyone drinking must be at least 21 years old.

Do I need to be physically fit to participate?
This experience does require a certain degree of physical health and fitness. You need to be able to hike across unpaved and uneven terrain.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable hiking clothes (shorts are ok), light jacket or sweater, sunglasses and hat, and sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes are required (sandals and flip-flops or will not be accepted).
What about dietary restrictions?
