It\u2019s an act of honor and tact, and represents the givers knowledge of the recipient\u2019s personality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Since more than 97% of Morocco\u2019s population is Muslim, gift giving is intertwined with Islamic tradition and belief. In Islam, gift giving is one of the best ways to show honor, appreciation, love and respect. Because of this, gifts are exchange a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">To get a rundown on all things Moroccan gift giving, we talked to two bloggers: Amanda Mouttaki and Emma Joystonbechal. Mouttaki runs a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/marocmama.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moroccan food blog<\/a>\u00a0and Joystonbechal runs a blog called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marrakechemma.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Good Life in Morocco<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Mouttaki summed up Moroccan gift giving philosophy: \u201cMoroccans are very generous people and saving face is an important part of their culture. Keep in mind when giving a gift not to overspend. They will want to give you a gift that is of equal or greater value, even if they can\u2019t really afford it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Gift Wrap and Presentation:<\/strong>\u00a0Paper gift wrap isn\u2019t a common way to conceal and present a gift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Mouttaki explained, \u201cGift wrapping is becoming more popular but is mostly limited to wedding gifts. Gift bags might be more common.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Joystonbechal added that presents are often wrapped in cloth or a scarf.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Etiquette:<\/strong>\u00a0Gifts are generally not opened upon reciprocation but later in private.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Giving to someone of the opposite sex is always a delicate matter outside of the family. If a male gives a female business associate a gift, it\u2019s recommended he say that it\u2019s from his wife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Go to Gifts:<\/strong>\u00a0The gift of money is popular and is not seen as tacky. Also, pastries and candies are sure to please and never to offend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Taboo Gifts:<\/strong>\u00a0Mouttaki advised, \u201cany type of alcohol would be quite taboo as most Moroccans are Muslim and alcohol is prohibited.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Joystonbechal said, \u201cdon\u2019t give lighters or things to do with fire.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Business Gift Giving Standards:<\/strong>\u00a0Gift giving between businesses and associates isn\u2019t expected but does sometimes occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Gift Giving Occasions:<\/strong>\u00a0Weddings and births are the most popular gift giving occasions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*Hostess Gift:<\/strong>\u00a0Hostess gifts are expected. Common ones include pastries, figs or flowers. Moroccans are known for their hospitality so mint tea will almost always be given to any visitor who visits a Moroccan home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In the rural parts of Morocco, where tradition is the norm, a popular hostess gift is a live chicken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u201cIf you are receiving a gift, you may say something like \u201coh you didn\u2019t have to do that.\u201d Which is a bit confusing as it\u2019s an unspoken requirement to bring some type of gift when invited to someone\u2019s home\u2019, said Mouttaki. \u201cYou also would want to keep track of what you were given and give something slightly larger when you visit that person\u2019s home in the future.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>* Birthday:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cIn Islam birthdays are not celebrated, however, some families do celebrate,\u201d Mouttaki told us. When families do celebrate birthdays, it\u2019s generally just for children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>* Weddings:<\/strong>\u00a0Moroccan weddings are elaborate and full of tradition and gift giving. Traditional Moroccan weddings last three to seven days and often start with a dowry gift, include a henna party for the bride and end with lavish gifts- usually money- from the wedding guests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*Eid:<\/strong>\u00a0These are two of the biggest Muslim holidays. The first Eid of the year is Eid Al-Fitr which takes place after Ramadan (a month of fasting) while Eid Al-Adha celebrates the end of the Hajj pilgrimage. Festivals and family celebrations take place and gift giving is considered a must. Common gifts are comparable to what we give for Christmas in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*Thank You Gifts:<\/strong>\u00a0Thank yous are generally expressed verbally and followed up within a week of receiving a gift with a thank you gift not a card.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*House Warming:<\/strong>\u00a0Candles, desserts and money are common.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As far as the housewarming celebration is concerned, Joystonbachel explained that \u201cit is expected that you invite everyone around for couscous to your house. If you have money you would sacrifice a sheep for good luck and make a big meal for everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*Coming of Age:<\/strong>\u00a0Mouttaki explained that gifts are often given when a baby boy is circumcised and girls get their ears pierced. This gift is usually monetary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*Baby Gifts:\u00a0<\/strong>Gift giving to newborns is very common. \u201cGifts are given at an aqeeka which is a party that parents throw for their child after it\u2019s born. Money or gold jewelry for the child are given,\u201d Mouttaki told us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*Zakat:<\/strong>\u00a0An obligatory monetary gift that everyone gives to charity. It\u2019s one of the five pillars of Islam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*Christmas:\u00a0<\/strong>Christmas is not recognized in Morocco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*New Year\u2019s:<\/strong>\u00a0New Year\u2019s Eve in Morocco is a huge celebration between friends and family. Elaborate dinners are prepared and gifts are exchanged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>*Funeral:<\/strong>\u00a0Joystonbachel explained that it is customary to give the family money at funerals.
