Between the rising cost of living and the way social life has shifted since COVID-19, it\u2019s easy to understand why nearly four in five Americans (78%) have decided to skip at least one traditional holiday this year. In its place, Americans are choosing to throw anti-ordinary celebrations \u2014 events that celebrate milestones that might otherwise seem mundane.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">To better understand what people are celebrating, we surveyed over 1,000 Americans to learn which traditional events they\u2019re skipping, which anti-ordinary celebrations they\u2019re embracing instead, and how much they\u2019re willing to spend on these moments.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Rethinking Traditional Celebrations<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rising costs and shifting priorities are changing how Americans celebrate, and what counts as a holiday is starting to look different.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"774\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.virgingifts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/JF1126_Virgin-Gifts_Anti-Ordinary-Celebration1-774x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14744\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The main reason Americans are skipping traditional celebrations is that they don\u2019t have a strong emotional connection to them, as 71% of respondents reported feeling this way. Skipping a traditional holiday can also be a money-saver. According to our study, the average hosting budget runs about $472 for Christmas and $272 for Thanksgiving. So, the 10% of people skipping Christmas and 9% skipping Thanksgiving this year won\u2019t feel quite as much of a pinch in their wallets.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"544\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.virgingifts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/JF1126_Virgin-Gifts_Anti-Ordinary-Celebration2-544x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14745\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Which Holidays are Americans Skipping \u2013 and Who\u2019s Skipping Them?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">The older Americans get, the less likely they are to celebrate traditional holidays. St. Patrick\u2019s Day is the most often skipped, with 34% saying they passed on it this year, followed by Valentine\u2019s Day (25%).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">It\u2019s no surprise that Valentine\u2019s Day lands in the top three \u2014 34% of singles surveyed don\u2019t think they\u2019ve been celebrated enough in the past year.
